Alright enough chatter let’s start putting all this info into action. In this tutorial, we’ll add your first product to the Rankings tool, find the right keywords to track, and start putting together a marketing plan to improve your sales.

How to add your first product:

Checklist for Adding Your First Product

(To see a more detailed list of step-by-step instructions, check out our help center article here):

  • Go to the “Rankings” tab and click the blue button that says “Add Product”.
  • Enter in your product’s ASIN or Amazon URL, then make sure to select the correct Amazon marketplace from the drop-down menu.
  • Decide if you want to track your product variations together or separately (you can refer to this guide if you’re unsure). By default, the tool will track all your variations together.
  • Click “Add Products” and wait a few minutes for your data to load.

Checklist for Adding Keywords to Your First Product

  • Click the blue link that says “Click here to add keywords.”
  • Enter in all the keywords you want to track for your product. We always recommend using as many keywords as your plan allows, so somewhere between 50 and 100 keywords would be a good place to start.
    • Make sure that your keywords are a good mix of short/general terms and long-tail/specific keywords.
    • If you’re struggling to come up with keyword ideas, try using our Keyword Research tool. There are also plenty of other services out there that could help with this, including Google’s Keyword Planner and Deep Words.
  • Click “Add Keywords” and wait another few minutes.

How to Track Competitors’ Sales

Once you’ve added your product, we recommend repeating this same process with competing products in your niche. From there, let’s take a second to turn on sales tracking for your competitors so that we can get a peek of how much product they’re turning over.

We won’t dive into the Sales Tracker yet, but in a few quick clicks we can turn it on and make sure that when we come back in a few days, there’s data for us to look at. Here’s a very short guide to turning on the Sales Tracker:

How to Develop New Marketing Strategies Off This Data

  • Start measuring changes in your marketing efforts against your rankings. The best way to know if something is working is to see if it translates into better rankings. Whether you’re launching a PPC campaign, running a promotion, or making any other marketing push, let your rankings be the judge of whether the campaign is paying off.
  • Strategically optimize your listing for new keywords. The highest-listed products on any Amazon search will always receive an exponentially greater share of sales. Find the highest-volume keywords where your products are just outside of the first one or two pages and then optimize your listing for these keywords. Just a small change in your rankings here can translate into a big windfall.
  • Track your competitors. Add your competitors’ products into the tool. Are any of them making strong moves up the rankings? What are they doing that you’re not?
  • Protect your downside. Are your rankings unexpectedly dropping? If so, you’ll want to immediately figure out why and address the issue as quickly as possible.
  • Run a promotion and track its effectiveness. As we’re about to see, running a promotion on Vipon, our deals community, can be the most efficient way to improve your rankings. And with any campaign you run, you’ll want to ensure that your promotion is translating into higher rankings.
